This free Kings of Israel quiz spans the entire monarchy period of Israel's history โ from Saul, Israel's first king chosen by popular demand, through the glorious but flawed reign of Solomon, the tragic division of the kingdom, and the long decline that ended in Assyrian and Babylonian exile.
All questions are based on the King James Version (KJV). Suitable for ages 12 and up, this quiz works well for Sunday School, adult Bible study, homeschool curriculum covering Old Testament history, and personal enrichment.
The monarchy period covers roughly 500 years of Israel's history, recorded primarily in 1-2 Samuel and 1-2 Kings. It begins with Israel's demand for a king โ a request God granted while warning them of the consequences (1 Samuel 8). Saul was anointed as Israel's first king but ultimately failed due to disobedience and pride.
David's reign (1010-970 BC) represents the high-water mark. Called 'a man after God's own heart,' David unified the nation, captured Jerusalem, defeated Israel's enemies, and prepared extensively for the Temple his son would build. Even David's grave failures โ the sin with Bathsheba and Uriah โ are met with genuine repentance recorded in Psalm 51.
Solomon's reign brought unparalleled prosperity and the construction of the Temple โ but ended in compromise, as foreign wives led his heart away from God. His death triggered the tragic division of the kingdom into Israel (Northern, 10 tribes) and Judah (Southern, 2 tribes) โ a split that never healed.
The Northern Kingdom of Israel lasted until 722 BC when Assyria conquered it under Shalmaneser V. The Southern Kingdom of Judah lasted until 586 BC when Babylon destroyed Jerusalem under Nebuchadnezzar. Throughout this period, prophets like Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, and Jeremiah called both kingdoms back to covenant faithfulness.
Learn the first three kings in order: Saul, David, Solomon. These are the 'united monarchy' kings and are most frequently tested. Know key events from each reign.
Understand the divided kingdom. After Solomon, Israel split: the Northern Kingdom (Israel) had 19 kings โ all evil. The Southern Kingdom (Judah) had 20 kings โ some good, some evil. Quiz questions often ask which kingdom a specific king ruled.
Know the standout 'good kings' of Judah. Asa, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah are the most significant reforming kings. Know their key accomplishments.
Memorize key events associated with specific kings. Solomon = Temple; Ahab = Elijah confrontation; Hezekiah = Sennacherib's invasion and miraculous deliverance; Josiah = discovery of the Book of the Law.
How long will this take? Expect 10-15 minutes. Each question provides instant feedback.
Is this suitable for beginners? This quiz covers a lot of history, so reading at least 1 Samuel and 1 Kings first is recommended. But even basic Bible knowledge will get you through many questions.
Can I use this for my class or group? Absolutely โ free, no signup required, great for adult Sunday School and homeschool settings.
