Understanding the Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) were given by God to Moses at Mount Sinai approximately 1,446 BC. They are sometimes called the Decalogue (Greek for 'ten words') and represent the moral foundation of God's covenant with Israel — and by extension, the moral law that reflects God's own character.
The commandments divide into two groups corresponding to the two tablets of stone. Jesus summarized the entire law in two commands: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart... and thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself' (Matthew 22:37-39). The first four commandments fall under love for God; the last six under love for neighbor. Jesus did not abolish the law but fulfilled it — and the Holy Spirit writes it on believers' hearts (Jeremiah 31:33).
