This free Ten Commandments quiz covers Exodus 20 in depth โ the moral law God gave to Israel at Mount Sinai, written by His own finger on two tablets of stone. With 30 questions covering all ten commandments in order, their context, and their New Testament significance, this quiz challenges Bible students at every level.
All questions are based on the King James Version (KJV). Suitable for ages 10 and up, this quiz works well for Sunday School, confirmation classes, homeschool curriculum, and personal study.
The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) were given by God to Moses at Mount Sinai approximately 1,446 BC. They are sometimes called the Decalogue (Greek for 'ten words') and represent the moral foundation of God's covenant with Israel โ and by extension, the moral law that reflects God's own character.
The commandments divide into two groups corresponding to the two tablets of stone. The first four commandments (or three, in some traditions) govern our relationship to God: no other gods, no idols, no misuse of God's name, and the Sabbath. The remaining six (or seven) govern relationships to other people: honor parents, no murder, no adultery, no stealing, no false witness, no coveting.
Jesus summarized the entire law in two commands: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart... and thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself' (Matthew 22:37-39). The first four commandments fall under love for God; the last six under love for neighbor. Jesus did not abolish the law but fulfilled it โ and the Holy Spirit writes it on believers' hearts (Jeremiah 31:33).
Memorize all 10 commandments in order from Exodus 20. Quiz questions frequently ask which commandment number corresponds to which prohibition, and whether a given behavior violates a specific commandment.
Know the expanded explanations within Exodus 20. God doesn't just give one-line commands โ He explains some in detail. The Sabbath commandment includes the creation week rationale. The warning about idolatry mentions 'visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children.' Know these expansions.
Understand the difference between the two tables. God-ward commandments (1-4) and neighbor-ward commandments (5-10). Jesus's summary in Matthew 22:37-39 reflects this same division.
Note that Deuteronomy 5 contains a parallel version. The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Bible โ Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. There are slight differences in wording (especially in the Sabbath commandment's rationale). Quiz questions may test details from either passage.
