This free Book of Esther quiz covers all 10 chapters of one of the most dramatic books in the Old Testament. From Esther's surprising rise to queenship to Haman's downfall and the establishment of Purim, these 30 questions test both your story knowledge and your understanding of the book's deeper themes.
All questions are based on the King James Version (KJV). Suitable for ages 10 and up, this quiz works for Sunday School, women's Bible study, homeschool, and personal devotion.
The Book of Esther is unique among all biblical books in one striking way: the name of God does not appear anywhere in the text. Yet the fingerprints of divine providence are on every page. This 'hiddenness' of God in Esther is itself a theological statement โ God often works through natural circumstances, human decisions, and even pagan politics to accomplish His redemptive purposes.
The story centers on a Jewish orphan named Hadassah (Esther), raised by her cousin Mordecai, who unexpectedly becomes queen of Persia. When the wicked official Haman plots to annihilate all Jews in the empire, Esther must decide whether to risk her life to approach the king uninvited. Mordecai's challenge to her has become one of the most quoted verses in Scripture: 'Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?' (Esther 4:14).
The book culminates in a stunning reversal: Haman is hanged on the very gallows he built for Mordecai, the Jews are given the right to defend themselves, and the festival of Purim is established to commemorate their deliverance โ celebrated to this day by Jewish communities worldwide.
Read all 10 chapters before taking the quiz. The story's pace accelerates in chapters 5-8. Pay close attention to the sequence of Esther's two banquets, the king's sleepless night, and the reversal of Haman's plot.
Know all major characters. King Ahasuerus (Xerxes), Queen Vashti, Esther (Hadassah), Mordecai, Haman, and Zeresh (Haman's wife) all play important roles. Quiz questions frequently test relationships between characters.
Memorize Esther 4:14. Mordecai's challenge to Esther โ 'for such a time as this' โ is the most famous verse in the book and almost always appears in quiz questions.
Understand the 'ironic reversal' pattern. The book is built on dramatic reversals: the queen who was removed for disobedience is replaced by a humble orphan; the man who wanted to destroy the Jews is destroyed instead; the gallows meant for Mordecai are used for Haman. These reversals are a key feature of the book.
