This free Book of Ruth quiz covers all four chapters of one of the Old Testament's most beloved short books. With 30 carefully crafted questions on Ruth, Naomi, Boaz, and God's quiet providence, this quiz tests your knowledge of the story's details while illuminating its deeper themes.
All questions are based on the King James Version (KJV). The quiz is suitable for ages 10 and up and works equally well for Sunday School, women's Bible study, homeschool, and personal devotion.
The Book of Ruth is only four chapters long, but it carries an extraordinary theological weight. Set during the time of the Judges โ a dark period of spiritual failure in Israel โ Ruth shines as a story of covenant faithfulness, sacrificial loyalty, and God's quiet redemptive work through ordinary people.
The Hebrew word hesed โ often translated 'kindness' or 'loving-kindness' โ is the key word of the book. Ruth demonstrates hesed toward Naomi by refusing to return to Moab ('whither thou goest, I will go' โ Ruth 1:16). Boaz demonstrates hesed toward Ruth by going beyond his legal obligations as kinsman-redeemer. And God demonstrates hesed toward both women through the entire story.
The book also has a remarkable place in redemptive history. Ruth was a Moabitess โ a Gentile โ yet through her marriage to Boaz she became the great-grandmother of King David, and thus an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). God's grace reaches across ethnic and national boundaries to accomplish His purposes.
Read all four chapters before taking the quiz. The story moves quickly: Chapter 1 โ departure and return; Chapter 2 โ Ruth gleaning; Chapter 3 โ the threshing floor; Chapter 4 โ the city gate and redemption. Know the structure.
Memorize Ruth 1:16-17. This is the most-quoted passage in the book: Ruth's pledge of loyalty to Naomi. Quiz questions frequently test the exact wording.
Understand the kinsman-redeemer concept. In Hebrew culture, a close male relative (goel) had the right and responsibility to redeem a widow and her family's land. Boaz fulfilled this role, pointing forward to Christ as our ultimate Redeemer.
Know the genealogy. Ruth 4:17-22 reveals that Obed (Ruth's son) was the father of Jesse, who was the father of David. This genealogy connects the book directly to Israel's greatest king and ultimately to Jesus.
